Solution:Itisnormalforthesliderstochangepositionwhencertainsoundapplicationsareused.The
applicationsareawareoftheVolumeMixerwindow(inWindowsXP,VolumeControlwindow)andare
allowedtochangethesettingsthemselves.AnexampleistheWindowsMediaPlayer.Usuallythe
applicationhasslidersavailabletocontrolthesoundfromwithintheapplication.
•Problem:ThevolumeslidersdonotalltintheVolumeControlwindowinWindowsXP.
Solution:PressCtrl+Skeyswhilethevolumecontr olisinfocus,andtogglet oasmallersize.
•Problem:Thebalanceslidercannotcompletelymuteonechannel.
Solution:Thecontrolisdesignedtocompensateforminordifferencesinbalanceanddoesnot
completelymuteeitherchannel.
•Problem:ThereisnovolumecontrolforMIDIsoundontheVolumeMixerwindow(inWindowsXP,
VolumeControlwindow).
Solution:Usethehardwarevolumecontrol.InWindowsXP,usethehardwarevolumecontrolorthe
WavevolumecontrolontheVolumeControlwindow.ThisisbecausetheBuilt-InSynthesizerSoftware
doesnotsupportthecontrol.
•Problem:ThesoundcannotbeturnedoffcompletelyevenifyousettheMastervolumecontrolat
minimum.
Solution:YoucanstillhearsomesoundeventhoughyouhavesettheMastervolumecontrolatminimum.
Toturnoffthesoundcompletely,gototheMastervolumecontrolandselectMutespeakers(inWindows
VistaandWindowsXP,Mute).
•Problem:Sounddoesnotcomefromaheadphoneoraspeaker,oryourcomputercannotrecordsounds
whentheSmartAudioissettoMULTI-STREAMmode(WindowsVista).
Solution:Toswitchfromonedevicetoanother(forexample,fromaspeakertoaheadphone,orfroman
externalmicrophonetoabuilt-inmicrophone),doasfollows:
1.ClickStart➙ControlPanel➙HardwareandSound.
2.ClicktheSmartAudioicon.TheSmartAudiowindowopens.
3.Mak esurethatyouareinMUL TI-STREAMmodeintheAudioDirectorwindow.
4.IntheVolumeMixerwindow,selectthedeviceyouwant-forexample,speakers.Ifyourcomputer
isattachedtoaThinkPadMiniDockPlusoraThinkPadMiniDock,youcanalsoselectadevice
fromthem.
5.Playanysoundviaamusicprogram(forexample,WindowsMediaPlayer).Makesurethatsound
comesfromspeakersnow.
6.Then,ifyouwouldliketoswitchtoaheadphone,closethemusicprogram.
7.GototheVolumeMixerwindow.Thenselectanotherdevice,whichisnowtheheadphone.
8.Playanysoundviathemusicprogram.Makesurethatsoundcomesfromaheadphoneattached
directlytothesystem.
