Glossary

AE(Auto-Exposure) A general purpose shooting mode
where the camera selects the aperture and shutter
speed to its metered reading. On some cameras, the aperture,
shutter, and ISO settings are automatically set.
AE/AF lock A camera setting that lets you lock the current
exposure and/or autofocus setting prior to taking a photo.
This button lets you recompose without holding the shutter
release button half way down.
AF assist illuminator In low light and low contrast shooting
conditions, the AF (autofocus) assist illuminator automatically
emits a light. It is located in the front bottom of the flash. The
AF-assist beam is compatible with most recent cameras, help-
ing the Speedlight to focus its flash properly.
aperture Also referred to as the f-stop setting of the lens. The
aperture controls the amount of light allowed to enter
through the camera lens. The higher the f-stop numerical set-
ting, the smaller the aperture is opened on the lens. Wider f-
stop numerical settings are represented by lower numbers,
such as f/2. The wider the aperture, the less depth-of-field in
the image. The smaller the aperture, the more depth-of-field
is in focus in the image.
aperture priority A camera setting where you choose the
aperture, and the camera automatically adjusts the shutter
speed according to the cameras metered readings. Aperture
priority is often used for the photographer to control depth-
of-field.
autofocus The ability for the Speedlight to focus correct dis-
tance to a subject as the camera lens is focused, thus supply-
ing correct distance information to the flash.
bounce flash Pointing the flash head in an upward position
or toward a wall, thus softening the light illuminated off the
subject. Bouncing the light often eliminates shadows and pro-
vides a smoother light for portraits.
