Pelican cases. These are some of
the best cases you can get. Pelican
cases are unbreakable, watertight,
airtight, dustproof, chemical resist-
ant, and corrosion proof. They are
built to military specs and are
unconditionally guaranteed forever.
Pelican cases even float in salt
water with a fifty-five pound load
inside. A standard Pelican case that
holds two camera bodies, a wide
angle to medium zoom, a telephoto
zoom, and two Speedlights costs
about two hundred dollars. That is
not a lot of money when you con-
sider how much it would cost to
replace all of that gear if it were
smashed or wet.
Shoulder bags. These are the
standard camera bags you can find
at any camera shop. They come in
a multitude of sizes to fit almost
any amount of equipment you can
carry. Reputable makers include
Tamrac and Lowepro. Look them
up on the Web to peruse the vari-
ous styles and sizes.
Back packs. You wear these cam-
era cases on your back just like a
standard back pack. These also
come in different sizes and styles.
Some even offer laptop carrying
capabilities. The type of back pack
case I use when traveling is a
NaneuPro Alpha. The design looks
like a military pack, so thieves don’t
even know you are carrying camera
equipment. When traveling, I usu-
ally pack this up with two camera
bodies, a wide angle zoom, a long
telephoto, three or four prime
lenses, two Speedlights, a reflector
disk, a twelve-inch PowerBook, and
all of the plugs, batteries, and other
accessories that go along with my
gear. And, with all that equipment
packed away, I still have space left
over for a lunch. Lowepro and
Tamrac also make some very
excellent back packs.
Backgrounds and lightstands
Although background stand kits and light
stands are available with carrying cases, I
find it easier to put everything in one case.
104 Part II Creating Great Photos with the Creative Lighting System
5.13 A gun case makes a great travel case for background stands and seamless backdrops.
Light stands, Speedlights, and umbrellas can then be carried in the bag that the background
stands originally came with.
