catchlight Using the SB-800’s catchlight
panel while pointing the flash head straight
up provides the light needed to highlight a
portrait subject’s eyes and a small amount
of fill flash.
channel Also referred to as communication
channel. To avoid interfering with other
wireless flash users in the same vicinity, the
master and slave units can communicate on
one of four channels. Communications in
CLS is partially based on setting the master
and all additional Speedlights to the same
channel. If by chance another photographer
is using the same channel in the vicinity,
your CLS units may fire from the other pho-
tographer’s control. To avoid this, set the
master and other Speedlights to a different
channel.
close-up flash Close-up flash capabilities
are achieved by using close-up adapters or
the macro Speedlights available in the
Creative Lighting System.
colored gel filters Colored translucent fil-
ters that fit over the flash head, changing
the color of the light emitted on the subject.
Colored gels can be used to create a colored
hue of an image. Gels are often used to
change the color of a white background
when shooting portraits or still lifes, by plac-
ing the gel over the flash head and firing the
flash at the background.
compatibility The ability of a camera, lens,
or Speedlight to operate correctly when
connected to one another. For example, to
take advantage of all wireless lighting capa-
bilities, the Speedlight, digital SLR, and
lenses must be compatible.
contacts Electronic contacts located on the
bottom of a Speedlight’s shoe that makes
contact with the cameras hot shoe, thus
electronically connecting the Speedlight to
the camera.
continuous flash The ability to use a cam-
era’s continuous shooting modes with a
Speedlight and have the Speedlight fire cor-
rectly adjusted flashes with each exposure.
Creative Lighting System Also referred to
as CLS, allows for multiple flash capabilities
in a wireless environment, taking advantage
of communication of exposure information
between the camera, master flash unit, and
remote Speedlights. Nikon’s wireless light-
ing system utilizes compatible SLRs, i-TTL
metering, the SB-800, SB-600, SB-200, SU-
800 Commander, and the SBR-200 Macro
Speedlights.
custom functions and settings The ability
to customize Speedlight features and set-
tings. Custom functions and settings can be
made on both the Speedlight(s) and the
camera, depending on the functionality
desired.
D-type lenses Nikon D-type lenses send
distance information to the camera body
and allow for aperture settings to be made
either by the camera or on the aperture lens
ring. See also G-type lenses.
default settings Factory settings of the
Speedlight. When connecting your
Speedlight to your camera, the Speedlight
works automatically while in auto, aperture,
shutter priority, or program modes.
digital SLR Single lens reflex camera with
interchangeable lenses and an image
sensor.
exposure compensation The ability to
take correctly exposed images by letting you
adjust the exposure, typically in 1/3 stops
from the metered reading of the camera.
Enables the photographer to make manual
adjustments to achieve desired results.
