APPENDIX B

METs are defined as the ratio of the current body energy expenditure rate compared with basal metabolic rate (BMR):

METs = (VO2 rate of current state) / 3.5

where 3.5 represents BMR. VO2 (oxygen uptake) and 3.5 are in units of ml/kg/minute of oxygen consumed by the body. This oxygen consumption rate corresponds to about 72 calories per hour for a 150-pound person.
