Using NETUtil

NETUtil is the utilit y you use to create and main tain your AliasDB and NETUsers ￿les. For descriptions of the NETUtil commands and examples of ho w they are used, refer the \NETUtil Reference" c hapter.

Invoking NETUtil

To invoke NETUtil, type netutil at the MPE/iX prompt. The NETUtil prompt looks like this:

netutil=>

Special Control Characters

You can enter these special con trol characters while y ou are using any NETUtil command:

A double forward slash (//), whic h stops the execution of a command while in prompting mode and returns the NETUtil prompt.

4Control5-Y, which terminates an executing command and returns the NETUtil prompt.

The 4Break5 key, which returns the MPE/iX prompt. F rom MPE, use the RESUME command to return to NETUtil or the ABOR T command to abort NETUtil.

Setting Up ALLBASE/NET on the Client

There are two tasks you perform on the clien t to set up ALLBASE/NET: Adding alias pro￿les to the AliasDB ￿le.

Checking the SERVICES.NET.SYS ￿le (for ARP A services).

The AliasDB ￿le contains an alias pro￿le for eac h alias name that corresponds to a DBEnvironment on the server. You create the ￿le the ￿rst time y ou add an alias pro￿le with NETUtil's ADD ALIAS command. Once the ￿le is created, use ADD ALIAS to add more alias pro￿les to it.

NETUtil provides three commands for main taining alias pro￿les in the AliasDB

￿le: CHANGE ALIAS, DELETE ALIAS, and SHO W ALIAS. Instructions for using these commands follo w later in this section. If y ou are using ARPA services, the SERVICES.NET.SYS on the clien t requires an ARPA user entry. If this entry doesn't exist, you must update the ￿le. The section \Chec king the Services File on the Clien t" later in this chapter discusses updating the ￿le. If loopbac k is being used, the ARPA name needs to be the local host.
