General information 5
The server supports up to two Pentium III microproces-
sors. The s erver comes with at least one proces sor
installed; you can install an additional processor to
enhance performance and provide SMP capability.
Large system memory
The memory bus in t he server su pports up to
2gigabytes (G B) of system memory. The memory con-
troller provides err or correcting code ( EC C) support for
up to four industry standard PC133, 3. 3 V, 168-pin, 8-
byte, reg ister ed, syn chrono us- dynamic-ra ndom access
memory (SDRAM) dual inline memory modules
(DIMMs).
System-management capabilit ies
The Netf inity Manager software provided on t he Serv-
erGuide C Ds enables yo u to manage th e functions of
the server locally and remotely. See “Netfinity Man-
ager” on page 75 for more information.
Integrated network environment support
The server come s with an Ethe rnet co ntroller on t he
system board. This Ethernet controller has an interface
for connecting to 10-Mbps or 100-Mbps networks. The
server automatically selects between 10BASE-T and
100BASE-TX environments. The controller provides
full-duplex (FDX) capability, which enables simulta-
neous transmission and reception of data on the Ether-
ne t loca l ar e a ne tw ork (LAN ).
IBM ServerGuide CDs
The Serv erGuide CDs included with IBM Netfinity serv-
ers pro v ide programs to help you set up the server and
install t he network operating system (NOS). The Serv-
erGuide program detects the hardware options t hat are
installed, and provides the correct configuration pro-
gram and device drivers. In addition, the ServerGuide
CDs include a var iety of appl ication pr ograms for the
server.

Reliability, availability, and se rviceabilit y

Three of the most i m portant featur es in s erver desi gn are
reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS). These fac-
tors help to ensure the integrity of the data stored on the
server; that the server is available when you want to use it;
and that shou ld a failure occur, you can easily diagnose and
repair the failure with minimal inconvenience.
The following is an abbreviated list of the RAS features that
the server supports.
Me nu-dri ve n se tu p, sy s t em configu rat ion, RAID co nf ig-
ur at ion, an d dia gn os tic pro grams
Power-on self-test (POST)
Error co de s and me ss a ges
Upgradable BIOS and diagnostics
Automa tic restart after a power fai lure
CRC checking on the SCSI buses
Error checking and correcting (ECC) memory
