Installing options 59
9. Install the voltage regulator module (VRM) included in
the microprocessor k it.
Attention: Use of othe r VRMs might cause the server
to overheat.
a. Center the VR M over th e VRM connector. Make
sure that the VRM is oriented and aligned cor-
rectly.
b. Press th e VRM in to the conn ector.
Notes:
a. If y ou r e move t h e mi cro proc es sor l ate r, r em ember

microprocessor connect or and to remove the
VRM.
b. To remove the VRM, press down on the two
rel ea se l at che s on th e s yst em boar d a t the b ot t om

board.
10. If you have other option s to install or remove, do s o
now; otherwise, replace the support bracket and the air
baffle, then go to “Installing the sid e cover ” on page 60.
Attention: To avoid damage and ensure proper server
operation when you install a new or an additional micropro-
cessor, use microproce ssors that have the sam e cache siz e
and type, and the same clock speed. Microproce ssor inter-
nal and external clock frequencies must be identical.
To remove a microprocessor:
Note: Do not use any tools when removing the micropro-
cessor.
Attention: When you handle Electrostat ic Discha rge-Sen-
siti ve devi ce s (ESD ), take p reca uti on s t o av oi d damag e fro m
static electricity. For details on handling these devices, refer
to the following Web si te and use a search term of ESD:
http://www.ibm.com/
1. Review the safe ty pre c autions lis ted in “Saf ety informa-
t ion ” on pa ge 155.
2. Turn off the server and peripher al devices and discon-

the cover (see “Removin g the side cover” on page 44
fo r details) .
3. Remove the support bracket and the air baffle from
behind the support bracket. Store them both in a safe
place.
4 . Re m ov e an y he atsin k s:
Note: A t hermal material is used between the heatsink
and the processor. This material when heated
and cooled causes the heatsink to adher e to the
processor. Some forc e may be re quire d to
remove the heatsink.
a. Press th e handle of the heatsink cli p down and
toward the back until i t relea se s , and lift it up and
