Alert Manager
The Alert Manage r is an extendable facility that allows
receiving and processing of application-generated alerts. A
variety of actions can be taken in response to alerts, includ-
ing logging alerts, notifying the user, forwarding the alert to
anot h er sy st em , ex ec uting a pr og ram , pl ay in g a WAV file
(available only on multimedia systems), generating an
SNMP alert message, dialing out to a digital pager service
(ava i la ble on ly on sy st ems th at ha ve a m odem) , or ta ki ng an
appl icat ion- defi ned act ion . Action s are user- def inabl e, usi ng
a flexible ac tion management interface.
Also, an extensive, detailed log is kept of all alerts received
by the A l ert Man ag er. Lo gg ed in for ma ti on in cl ud es da te and
time the al ert was received, type and severity of the alert,
the ID of the ap plicat ion that gene rat e d the alert, as well as
any text that was generated and any action taken by the
Alert Manager. Individual or multiple alerts can be select ed
from the log and printed for later reference, or deleted once
problems are corrected. This service is available for stand-
alone use and network us e.
Alert on LAN configuration
Use the Ale rt on LAN conf iguration servic e to configure
monitoring options of Alert on LAN-capable systems locally
and remotely. Systems with Alert on LAN ca pability pr ovide
critical status information about system states. The data is
reported by hardware or software (depending upon whether
the systems in currently powered on or not) using TCP /IP.
Capacity Management
Capacity Management is an easy-to-use resource manage-
ment and pl anning tool for net work managers and adminis-
trat ors, allowing y ou to remot ely moni tor the per formance of
servers on the network.
Cluster Manager
Clust er Manager is an application design ed to enhance the
cluster management capabilities of the Microsoft Cluster
Serve r (M SC S) adminis tr ation console, included with
Microsoft Windows NT Version 4.0 Enterprise Edition. Clus-
ter Mana ger builds on the power of MSCS, providin g an i nte-
grated graphical interface that enables you to quic kly and
easily mon itor and manage the clustered systems on your
network. This service is available only on systems running
Windows NT W orkstatio n 4.0.
