To install an adapter:
Attention: When you ha ndle Elect rostati c Discharge-Sensi-
tive devices (ESD), take precautions to avo id damage from
static elec tricity. For details on handling these devices, refer
to the following We b site and search for ESD:

1. Review Saf ety in format ion” on page 155.
2. Turn o ff the server and peripheral devices and discon -
nect all external cables and power cords; then, remove
the side cover. See “Removing the si de cover” on
page 44 for de tails.
3. Determine which expans ion sl ot you will use for the
ad apter.
Note: Check the instructions that come with the
adapter for any require m ents or res trict ions.
4. Remove the access clip from the rear frame of the
server by sliding it upward and then to the r i ght.
5. Remove the expansion- s lot cover. Store it in a safe
pl ace for future use.
Attention: Expansion-slot covers must be installed on
all vacant slots. This maintains the electromagnetic
emissions characteristics of the system and ensures
proper cooling of system components.
6. Refer to the documentation that comes with your
adapter for any cabling instructions. It might be easier
for you to route any cables before you install the
adapter.
7. Remove th e adapter from the static-p rotective pack-
age.
Attention: Avoid touching the components and gold-
edge connectors on the adapter.
8. Place the adapter, component-side up, on a flat, static-
protective surface.
9. Set a ny jumpers or switches as described by t he
adapter manufacturer.
10. Install the adap ter:
a. I f nec es s ary, push the card gu id e tow a rd the fro nt
of the server until it latches into a position where
you can insert the adapter into the guides.
b. Car efully grasp th e adapter by i ts top edge or
upper corners, and align it with the ex pansion slot
on the system board.
c. Press the adapter

into the expansion slot.
Attention: When you install an adapter in t h e
server, be sure that it i s completely and correct ly
seated in the system-board connector before you
apply pow er. Incompl ete insertion might cause
damage to the system board or the adapter.
d. When the adapter is fully seat ed, release the ca rd
guide by pushing inward on the latch. Make sure
the ca rd gu ide ho lds the adap ter s ecurel y in pl ace.
e. Install the screw that secures the adapter in the
ex pansion slot.
f. Replace the access clip by sliding it onto the rear
frame until it latches into place.
