DOCUMENTATION OVERVIEW

The following conventions are used when referring to actions performed using the keyboard:

Verb [item on which to act]

Action

Press [key]

Press and release the specified key.

Tap [key]

 

Hold [key]

Hold down the specified key during the command or action.

Type [text]

Type the specified text

Multi-select

To select more than one item using the mouse by holding the Shift or

 

Cmd (OS X, some Linuxes) or Ctrl (MS Windows, some Linuxes) while

 

clicking the items.

Key name+key name

Hold the specified modifier key(s) (Shift, Cmd, Ctrl, Alt, Fn, etceteras)

(e.g. Shift+X, Cmd+H)

and tap the ordinary key (alphabetic, numeric, or function key).

Key name+drag [item]

Hold the specified modifier key(s), then drag the item.

(e.g. Ctrl+drag item)

 

Key name, key name

Tap the keys in sequence. For example, Alt+F, G indicates that one

(e.g. Alt+F, G)

should hold the Alt key and tap F, then release both keys and tap G.

The following typographical conventions are used to help differentiate different word meanings:

Typographic Style

Meaning

Normal text

No special meaning.

Emphasis

Important text.

Strong emphasis

Very important text.

Data to be typed

Data to be typed on the keyboard.

‹ Key name+key name ›

Command or shortcut to be typed on the keyboard.

Control Label

The name of a control on the screen.

Menu > Sub-menu > Command

The “path” to select the specified command or control.

Filename

The name of a file.

Document reference

The name of a document or part of a document. Often a reference to

 

a section
