6. Network Terms Definition

LAN

A computer network that spans a relatively short-distance area. It makes possible to communicate between machines such as various computer and OA machines by connecting the high-speed communication line to the various computer and OA machines.

xDSL

A common designation of digital subscriber’s line that makes the acronym data communication possible by phone line.

Cable modem

Device that makes possible to access internet with a high speed by cable network.

IP

An address to distinguish between sender and receiver in case of using TCP/IP in communication.

Gateway

In a wide meaning, function unit or devices that make communicate information between network by accessing same kinds of network or different kinds of network.

Subnet mask

Mask that determines which IP address is included in which subnet.

ISP

Internet Service Provider.

DDNS

Dynamic Domain Name System. DNS that can upgrade, modify and notify the name record dynamically.

MAC address

Media Access Control Address, an inherit hardware address that is provided to each network device.

DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. Communication agreement that allocates and manages the necessary setting information automatically in order to execute TCP/IP.

FTP

Communication agreement that supports to transfer the file from one computer to the other computer over internet.

SMTP

Standard protocol that uses to send the email over internet.
