6 Additional Guidance
An important role of copiers and scanners is to faithfully reproduce the image quality of the original. With digital cameras, on the other hand, it is essential to regenerate captured images naturally.
However, attempting to faithfully reproduce a captured image does not always result in a natural image. This is why image rendering, an inherent technology of digital cameras, is so important to digital photography.
Image rendering is the inclusion of several elements including ‘exposure control appropriate to the scene => auto exposure (AE)’, ‘color reproduction based on human sense Æ addition of memorized colors’, ‘faithful color reproduction independent of background colors/color reproduction that compensates for the color temperature of the light source Æ auto white balance (AWB)’ and ‘tone representation that looks natural to the eye Æ γ characteristic’. Obviously, image rendering assumes that ‘precise focus control Æ auto focus (AF)’ is performed as well.
