drive-type number, entered individually from the keyboard, or set automatically. A

drive-type number

specifies the parameters of a hard-disk drive, based on a table
recorded in the systems BIOS.
To choose a setting for each option, press <Enter> to access the fields pop-up set-
tings menu . Then type c h aracters from the k ey board or use the lef t - or right-arro w ke y
to cycle through the following settings:
Auto (use this setting for all EIDE device s from De ll)
Off
User 1 or User 2
A specific drive-type number

NOTE: Operating systems that bypass the system BIOS may not obtain optimum

hard-disk drive performance.

); to use it for Primary Drive 1, highlight the Primar y Drive 1 option and
type a. In each case, the option setting changes to Auto. After the system reboots,
the System Setup program automatically sets the correct drive-type number and
options for each drive.

with the drive to ve rify that all jumper settings on the drive are appropriate for your
configuration.
If the system generates a drive error message the first time you boot your system
after inst allin g an EIDE drive, it may mean that your particular drive do es not work
with the automa tic drive-type detect feature . If you think that your problem is relat ed
to drive type, try entering your drive-type information as described in the following
subsections.
Use the dr ive-type num ber you found in th e doc um entat ion tha t came w ith th e dri ve,
or if the drive was installed by Dell when you purchased your system, access the
Manufacturing Test Report from the Dell Accessories folder.
To set the drive-t ype number in the System Setup program, highlight the appropriate
drive option (Primary Drive 0 o r P rim ary D rive 1) and type the corre ct drive-type num-
ber. If you prefer, you can press the right- or left-arrow key to increase or decrease,
respectively, the drive-type number until the correct one is displayed.
