high speed printing
Printing in which images are printed in bo th directions. This provides faster
printing. This is a lso called bidirect ional printing.
ICM
Image Color Matching. This setting uses the Windows 9 5 color matching method to
match the colors in your printout automatically with the colo r s d is played on your
screen.
initialization
Returns the printer to its defaults (fixed set of conditions). This happens every time
you turn on the printer or reset the printer.
ink jet
A method of printing in which each letter or symbol is formed by precisely
spraying ink onto paper.
interface
The connection between the computer a nd a peripheral such as a printer. Generall y,
printers have two interfaces, parallel and serial. A parallel interface transmits data
one byte, or eight bits, at a time. A serial interface transm its data one bit at a time.
IPS
Inches per second. This scale is used to measure the print head speed.
media
Materials upon which data is printed, such as envelopes, plain paper, special paper,
and transparency film.
MicroWeave
Printing in which images are printed in finer increments to r e d u ce the possibility of
banding and to produce laser-like im ages. See also banding.
monochrome
This means printing with only one color of ink, which is generally black ink.
parallel interface
See interface.
power-on functions
These are special functions, such as a printer operation check, that you can perform
by holding down a control panel button while turning on the printer.
printable area
The area of a page on which the printer can p r int. It is smaller than the physical si ze
of the page due to margins.
printer driver
A software program that sends commands for using the features of a particular
printer. Often shortened to “driver.” See also driver.
