Low storage space detection

To automatically detect that your storage space is running out, use the HSM Health Monitor (HHM) utility, which is designed to prevent an FSE system to run out of resources. HHM detects situations when the amount of data on monitored items rises above or drops below two configurable thresholds. When such a situation occurs, configurable actions are started. The items that can be monitored are the following:

file systems with FSE databases and system files

HSM file systems

FSE media pools assigned to HSM file systems

For each monitored item a warning threshold and a critical threshold are defined. Typically, when the warning threshold is crossed upwards or downwards, users or administrators are informed by e-mail. When the critical threshold is crossed upwards, an action should be typically started to prevent the system from running into unrecoverable problems. Since in such a situation FSE would continue operating until it ran out of media, there is a chance to recover. Therefore, when the critical threshold is crossed downwards, another action should typically be taken to retain the usability of the system.

To start the HSM Health Monitor (HHM) daemon (service) on the local system, if it is not already started during FSE installation, perform the following step:

Linux specific

Invoke the following command:

# /opt/fse/sbin/tools/hhm start

Windows specific

Using the Services tool in the Administrative Tools group of the Control Panel, start the HSM Health Monitor Service. The service is named FSE HSM Health Monitor.

Linux specific default behavior

By default, HHM monitors the FSE system directories on HHM server and its clients and sends an e-mail to the root account root@localhost when one of the following is true:

the warning threshold is crossed upwards

the warning threshold is crossed downwards

the critical threshold is crossed upwards

the critical threshold is crossed downwards
