Ascomputersspreadintoeverycorneroflife,theyprocessmoreandmoreinformation.Thedataonyour
computer,someofwhichmightbesensitive,isstoredonaharddiskdrive.Beforeyoudisposeof,sell,or
handoveryourcomputer,besuretodeletedatastor edonit.
Handingyourcomputerovertosomeoneelsewithoutdeletingtheloadedsoftware,suchasoperating
systemsandprogram,mightevenviolatelicenseagreements.Youareadvisedtocheckthetermsand
conditionsofthoselicenseagreements.
Therearemethodsthatseemtodeletethedata:
•Movethedatatotherecyclebin,andthenemptytherecyclebin.
•UsetheDeleteoption.
•Formatyourharddiskdrive,usingthesoftwareforinitializingit.
•Usingtherecoveryprogramtosettheharddiskdrivebacktothefactorydefaultsettings.
Theseoperations,however,onlychangetheleallocationofthedata,theydonotdeletethedataitself.In
otherwords,thedataretrievalprocessingisdisabledunderanoperatingsystemsuchasWindows.The
dataisstillthere,eventhoughitseemstobelost.Thus,itissometimespossibletoreadthedatabyuseof
specialsoftwarefordatarecovery.Ther eisariskthatpeopleofbadfaithmightreadandmisusethecritical
dataonharddiskdrivesforunexpectedpurposes.
Topreventleakageofdata,itbecomesveryimportantthatyoutakeresponsibilityfordeletingallthedata
fromtheharddiskdrivewhenyoudisposeof,sell,orhandoveryourcomputer.Youcandestroythedata
physicallybysmashingtheharddiskdrivewithahammer,ormagneticallybymeansofstrongmagnetic
power,thusmakingthedataunreadable.Butwerecommendthatyoumakeuseofthesoftware(payware)or
service(payservice)specicallydevelopedforthepurpose.

Ifaharddiskdriveorsolidstatedrivewithencryptiontechnologyisinstalledinyourcomputer ,youcan
logicallydisposeofallthedataonthedriveinaveryshorttimebyerasingthecryptographickey.The
dataencryptedwiththeoldkeyisnotphysicallyerasedbutr emainsonthedrive;however,itcannotbe
decryptedwithouttheoldkey.Thisfeatur eisenabledbyThinkPadSetupMenuExtensionUtilityandis
