Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and Solutions

Many of these questions and solutions come from AirLink Support.

Caution: Solutions should only be performed if you are experi- encing the specific problem indicated and have the specific modem model number indicated. Some solutions are very spe- cific to model numbers due to differing internal hardware.

What is RSSI? Why is the RSSI for my Raven negative?

RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) is a measurement of the strength, not necessarily the quality, of the received signal strength in a wireless environment. RSSI is used to determine when the signal is below a certain threshold at which point the modem is clear to send (CTS) or to determine the Roaming Threshold (the distance from the access point).

The RSSI is measured in dBm which is the power ratio in decibel (dB) of the mea- sured power referenced to one milliwatt (mW). One milliwatt is zero, therefore less than a milliwatt, common and ideal for cellular communication, is expressed as a negative interger.
