Logging on to your Windows computer with a user name and password

Depending on your operating system configuration, you may need to log on to one or both of your computers. Make sure to follow the logon instructions underneath the appropriate section in “Migrating data” on page 1-12.If you have additional questions about the log on requirements, see the table in item under Troubleshooting. For information on how to logon to your Windows machine, refer to the instructions below.

Windows XP

You must log on to your Windows XP machine with a user name that is part of the Administrators group. If you know the user name and password of a user that is part of the administrator’s group (this could be the built-in administrator account or an account you created as part of the Administrators group), follow the procedure under “Logging on to Windows XP with a user name that is part of the Administrators group”. If you don’t know the password of the administrator account and are unsure whether a user name is part of the Administrator’s group, follow the procedure under “Checking whether a user name is part of the Administrators group in Windows XP” on page A-4

Logging on to Windows XP with a user name that is part of the Administrators group

1.If you are already logged on as user that is not part of the Administrators group, close all programs, click Start -> Logoff.

2.Select a user name that has Administrator privileges.

3.Log on with the correct user name and password. If you are not already logged on as that user, follow the instructions above under “Checking whether a user name is part of the Administrators group in Windows XP” on page A-4.If there are no user names that you know the password for and that are part of the Administrators group, contact your administrator to either get the Administrator user name password or to have your user name added to the Administrators group.
