Booting the Remote Access Concentrator
Youcan boot the operational software by downloading the image from a
host system or another Model 5399 Remote Access Concentrator,or by
usingthe image contained in Flash me mory (self-boot).However, before
actually booting theunit, you must first initialize the IP address
parameters either manually orby using the auto-initialize feature. The
followingsections describesthe twomethods ofinitializing theIP address
parameters, and the various boot methods.

Auto-initializing the IP Address Parameters

The Remote Access Concentrator is distributedwithout an IP address or
preferred load host defined in ROM.Whe n the deviceis booted, the
Remote Access Concentrator attempts toauto-initialize itself using
BOOTP (bootstrapprotocol) and RARP (Reverse Address Resolution
Protocol).
This method of initializingthe IP address parameters is
generallydone when bootingfrom a hostsystem (not when
self-booting).
The Remote Access Concentrator supports theBOOTP a ndR ARP
protocols.U se these protocols to obtain boot informationf rom a UNIX
host without requiringany manual set-up on the Remote Access
Concentrator.
BOOTPallows a diskless client to determine its IP address,
the IP addressof the server, and the name of the file to be
loaded intom emory.
RARP maps a hardware addressinto an IP address.
TheROMs invoke this system of acquiring boot information when a boot
isinitiated and the Remote Access Concentrator is not initialized. Under
this condition, the Remote Access Concentrator first triesto get boot
information via BOOTPor RARP.
