ping
Thepin g command sends an InternetControl Message Protocol (ICMP)
mandatory ECHO_REQUEST datagram to elicit an ICMP
ECHO_RESPONSE from a host or gateway. ECHO_REQUEST
datagrams(pings) have an IP and ICMP header,followedby astructured
time value and an arbitrary number of pad bytes that fill out the packet.
The syntax forthis command is:
pinghost_ip_address [data_size][npackets]
•Thehost_ip_addressentry is the Internet address of the host
or gatewayfrom which you wish to elicit a response.
The optional data_sizeentry is the number ofbytes sent in a
datagram packet. The defaultvalue is 64 and the maximum
valueis 1024.
The optional npacketsentry is thenumber of packets to
transmit. If youspecify npackets, you must also s pecify a
data_size.
The pingcommand display looks similar to this:
If you enter the ping command without specifying an IP address, the
display looks similarto this:
When you enter the ping command, the following prompt is displayed:
EnterSegmenttobeused[1]:
Toexit out of ping either wait for npackets to be transmitted or, at any
point, type q. The ping statistics display upon exit.
