Key Term

DNS Domain name system. The Internet uses this system to translate the names of host computers into IP addresses. A DNS number identifies the server that handles the translation.

Each IP address has four numbers (from 0 to 255) that are separated by periods.

Key Term

IP Internet protocol. Everyone who logs in to the Internet needs a unique identifier (an

IP address). Some networks dynamically assign a temporary IP address upon login while others assign a permanent IP address.

Query DNS Check the Query DNS box if you’re not sure whether you need to

 

 

 

 

enter DNS addresses. Many systems do not require that you enter DNS

 

 

 

 

addresses. If you do need DNS addresses, uncheck the DNS box, tap the space

 

 

 

 

to the left of each period in the Primary and Secondary DNS fields, and then

 

 

 

 

enter the appropriate sections of each address.

 

 

 

 

IP Address Check the IP Address box to use a temporary IP address. Uncheck

 

 

 

 

the IP Address box to enter a permanently assigned address.
