Loss (RTL). RTL is the ratio of the reflected signal to the transmitted signal in dB. A 20 dB return loss means that the reflected signal is 20 dB down from the transmitted signal. Manufacturers provide Return Loss specifications for most RF components.

TRACE SIGNATURES

The TDR trace can be interpreted beyond the typical open and short condition. Cable impairments and components on the network have characteristic traces or signatures, representing both good and bad performance. Figure 3-4 gives examples of typical trace signatures for common cable faults and components. Some variation should be expected in component signatures. Technicians should note the characteristic trace signature of good components as they use the TDR to recognize the bad traces when testing similar components. Remember that the cable under test has loss, which increases with distance, so the
