Section 3: Microsoft & IBM Networks (SMB)

User-levelUser-level access control allows you to define rights for discs/volumes based on Access Control whom the user logged into the domain as. The StorPoint CD will act as a

“member server” in the NT-domain and verify the user’s identity and group memberships against a domain controller on the network. The advantages with this method are:

The user is not required to answer to password prompts every time he/she needs to access a protected disc or a volume.

The network administrator can administer the access rights for discs and volumes using Windows NT’s standard administration tools.

The network administrator can use the native user groups in the domain to set basic security.

Share-levelShare-level access control is based on different passwords for different shared Access Control discs/folders. No verification with domain controllers will take place. This is a

good method to use in smaller “workgroup based” networks when there is no domain controller.

Recommendation! User-level access control is the preferred method to use in Windows NT server based networks.
