Appendix D: Making a Correct UTP Cable

• Use good-quality connectors and tools.

RJ-45 Connectors (sockets and plugs): The BASE-T Standard uses RJ-45 sockets and plugs. The RJ-45 socket has eight pins. The pins are numbered 1 to 8. Looking at the socket with insertion key facing down, Pin Number 1 is to the left.

Colors: The first color is the base color on the cable. Second color is the stripe color of the cable. A straight-through cable has identical ends.
