Section 6Maintenance
This section containsinstructions for preventive maintenance, diagnostics,
generaltroubleshooting, and corrective maintenance. If the instrument does not
function properly, troubleshooting and corrective measures should be taken
immediately to circumventadditional problems.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

Preventive maintenance consists of cleaning, vis ual inspection, performance
checking, and, if needed, readjustment. The preventive maintenance schedul e
established forthe instrument should be based on the environment in which it is
operatedand the amount of use. Under average conditions, scheduledpreventive
maintenanceshould be performed every 2000 hours of operation.
CAUTION. A 2% RMAflux content solder is recommended for making repairs in
this instrument. Cleaningof rosin residue is not recommended. Most cleaning
solvents tend to reactivatethe rosin and spread it under components whereit
may cause corrosionunder humid conditions. The rosin residue,if left alone,
does not exhibit these corrosiveproperties.
The instrument should becleaned often enough to prevent dust or dirt from
accumulating. Dirt acts as a thermal insulating blanket that preven ts effective
heat dissipation, and can provi de high-resistance electrical leakage paths betw een
conductors orcomponents in a humid environment.
Exterior. Cleanthe dust from the outside of the instrument by wiping with a
soft cloth or smallbrush. A brush is especially useful to remove dust from
around the selectorbuttons, knobs, and connectors. Hardened dirt may be
removed with acloth dampened in water that contains a mild detergent.
Abrasive cleanersshould not be used.
Crt.Clean the crtprotective shield, light filter, and crt face with a soft, lint-free
cloth dampenedin denatured alcohol.
Interior.Clean the interior of the instrument by loosen ing the accumulated dust
with a dry, soft brush. Once the dirt is loosened remove it with low--pressureair
(high-velocityair can damage some parts). Hardeneddirt or grease may be
removed with acotton-tipped applicator dampened with a solution of mild
