Overview
This chapter describes the procedure for installing a 3C971-F ATMLink PCI adapter driver for Microsoft¨ Windows NT™ 3.51 workstations. The 3C971-F adapter driver provides standards-based ATM LAN emulation connectivity to an ATM network. This allows you to run legacy LAN applications, Ethernet networking technologies and Ethernet protocols over an ATM network.
The LAN emulation SVC driver utilizes signaling software to establish connections between two end stations on the ATM network. The driver operates below the host’s Link Level protocol. It provides for broadcast/multicast addressing, along with other LAN-like services, so that host network protocols function as if they were talking to a real MAC layer of an Ethernet interface. Connections are set up and torn down dynamically by the signaling software provided with the 3C971-F adapter. Once the LAN emulation server (LES) has been set up on the ATM network, it is easy to add a LAN emulation client (LEC) to the network.
CAUTION: Your ATM switch must be set to support the UNI 3.0 standard for switched virtual circuits.
Multiple LAN Emulation Clients
The 3C971-F adapter can communicate with up to four LAN emulation servers (LESs) at a time. During installation of the hardware driver, four client
