4 Choose the “Quietest” Channel for your Wireless Network
In locations where homes or offices are close toget her, such as apartment
buildings or office complexes, there may be wireless net works nearby that
can conflict with yours.
Use the Site Survey cap abilities found i n the Wireless U tility of your
wireless adapter to locate any other wireless networks that a re available
(see your wireless adapter’s user manual), and move your Router and
computers to a channel as far away from other networks as pos sible.
• Experiment with more than one of the ava ilable channels, in order
to find the clearest c onnection and avoi d interference f rom
neighboring cordless phones or other wireless devices .
• For Belkin wireless ne tworking produc ts, use the
detailed Site Survey a nd wireless chan nel information
included with your wire less network ca rd. See your
network card’s user guid e for more informa tion.
These guidelines should allow you to cover the maximum possible area
with your Router. Should you need to cover an even wider area, we
suggest the Belkin Wireless Range Extender/Access Point.
5 secure Connections, VPN s, and aol
Secure connections t ypically requir e a user name an d password, and a re
used where security is important. Secure connections include:
• Virtual Private Networ k (VPN) connec tions, often
used to connect remote ly to an office n etwork
• The “Bring Your Own Acces s” program from A merica
Online (AOL), which lets yo u use AOL through broadband
provided by another cab le or DSL servi ce
• Most online banking web sites
• Many commercial website s that require a u ser
name and password to ac cess your accoun t
Secure connections can be interrupted by a computer’s power
management setting, w hich causes it to “go to sleep.” The si mplest
solution to avoid this is to simply reconnect by rerunning the VPN or AOL
software, or by re-lo gging into the sec ure website.
A second alternative is to change your computer’s power management
settings so it does not go to sleep; however, this may not be appropriate
for portable computers. To change your power management set ting under
Windows, see the “Power Op tions” item in the Control Panel.
If you continue to have difficulty with Secure Connections, VPNs, and AOL,
please review the steps above to be sure you have addressed these issues.
