IRREGULAR DIAL TONEIf you have voice mail s ervice, you might hear an irreg ular dial tone
when you have messages. Contact your telephone company for instructions on restoring a dial tone.
TURN OFF CALL WAITING (CATCH-PHONE)— See your telephone direc to r y for instructions on
deactivating this feature. Then adjust the dial-up networking connecti on proper tie s .
1Click the Start button and click Control Panel.
2Click Printers and Ot her Ha rdware , c li ck Ph one an d Modem Optio ns , click the Dialing Rules tab,
and then click Edit....
3In the Edit Location window, ensure that To disable call waiting, dial: is checked, and then select
the proper code as listed in your telephone directory.
4Click Apply and click OK.
5Close the Phone and Modems Options wi ndow.
6Close the Control Panel window.
VERIFY THAT THE MODEM IS COMMUNICATING WITH WIN DOWS
1Click the Start button and click Control Panel.
2Click Printers and Other Hardware and click Phone and Modem Opti ons.
3Click the Modems tab.
4Click the COM port for your modem.
5Click Propert ies, cl ick the Diagnostics tab, and then click Query Modem to v erify that the modem
is communicating with Window s.
If all commands receive responses, the modem is operating properly.
E-Mail Problems
ENSURE THAT YOU ARE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET With the O utlo ok E xpr ess e-ma il
program open, click File. If Work Offline has a check mark next to it, click the check mark to rem ove
it and connect to the Internet.
Transferring Information to a New Computer

The Microsoft® Win dows ® XP operating system provides a Files and Setting s Transfer wizard

to move data from the source computer to the new computer. You can move data such as:

•E-mails

Toolbar settings

•Window sizes

Internet bookmarks

You can transfer the data to the new computer over a network or serial connection, or you

can store it on a removable medium, such as a writable CD or floppy disk.
