Using an Isolated Power Supply

To take full advantage of opto-isolation, an isolated power supply should be used to provide the voltage at the input common connection. When using an isolated power supply, do not connect the ground of the isolated power to the ground of the controller. A power supply in the voltage range between 5 to 24 Volts may be applied directly (see Figure 3-2). For voltages greater than 24 Volts, a resistor, R, is needed in series with the input such that

1 mA < V supply/(R + 2.2KΩ) < 11 mA
