Distributed trunking uses the Distributed Trunking Interconnect Protocol (DTIP), which sends and receives proprietary protocol frames between two DT switches. DT ports are treated as standard LACP trunk ports. LACPDUs are advertised through DT ports.

DTIP interacts with LACP to synchronize the information about grouped links and the link status of the other distributed trunking switch.
