I
Seeyour DOS manual for further information about the PRINT command.
Ifyour systemdoes notincludePRINT.COM, you can printfiles by usingthe
PRN device name inCOPY or TYPE commands such as the following:
A>COPY README.DOC PRN
A>TYPE README.DOC >PRN
COPYqnd TYPEdo notpermit youto executeother commandswhile thefile
isprinting.
Ifyou want aparticular font, orprint pitch, you can make these settingsfrolm
the control panel before you startprinting. See Chapter 4.
Ifyou printfrom the DOS command level veryoften, it willbe advantageous
tocreate aprinter setup file. Then instead of setting font etc. manually each
time, you can complete the setup with asingle command from your
computer. For example, you can create afilecontaining printer commands
toselect letterquality. and select elitepitch withthe Standard mode. Youcan
find the commands in Chapter 8.We suggest the following:
Letter quality <ESC> “X” “1”
Elite pitch .’,.>
<ESC> .<1>
<ESC> !“<1> is apowerful command that, in addition to selecting elite
pitch, cancels unwanted features such as underlining which might be left
from previous commands. The angle brackets around the <1> indicate
character code 1,which is acontrol code, not the printable digit 1“.
Youmay want toplace additional commandsin thisfile, such asleft andright
margins,,line spacing and bottom margin commands. Or you may want to
create avariety of setup files with adifferent setof commands in each.
Toavoid excessline feeds, you shouldplace thecommands on one line inthe
setupfile. You may or may not be able to generate asetup file with word-
processing software; it depends on whether your software lets you enter
controlcodes. If your system includesthe file EDLIN.COM, however, you
can easily create asetup file with the DOS lineeditor.
Anappropriate name forthis setup file would be LQELITE.DAT. To use the
DOS lineeditor, type the command EDLIN LQELITE.DAT, then type the
underlinedparts of the following display. Press RETURN at the end of each
line.Do not type the symbol “A”.This symbolmeans to hold the CTRL key
down whilepressing the next key: for example, ‘V means to type CTRL-V.
‘C means to type CTRL-C, which indicates the end of the input.
