Subnet Mask

There are approximately 4.3 billion different

addresses in the IP Address range of

000.000.000.000 to 255.255.255.255. These

addresses can be divided into smaller, and much

more manageable, subnetworks, or subnets. The

Subnet Mask identifies which part of the IP

Address contains the Subnet Address and which

part contains the host (or device) address.

TCP

An acronym for Transmission Control Protocol.

TCP/IP protocol governing sequenced data.

TCP/IP

An acronym for Transmission Control Protocol/

Internet Protocol. A protocol suite developed by

ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency).

TCP/IP is a set of communications protocols that is

supported by a variety of computer platforms. TCP

controls the data transfer and IP controls the routing

of the data. The IP Address is a unique address that

identifies a device in a network. The IP Address

consists of four bytes of information and is

expressed as decimal numbers with the bytes

separated by periods.

(Example: 13.1.188.2)

Telnet

TCP/IP protocol governing character-oriented

terminal data.

Thicknet

Cabling scheme using twin axial cable. See

10Base5.

Thinnet

Cabling scheme using 50 ohm coaxial cable. See

10Base2.

TIFF

An acronym for Tagged Image File Format.

Token

The character sequence passed among nodes in

sequence to indicate which one has permission to

transmit.
