GLOSSARY 3

in-bandTransmission of auxiliary information, e.g., management messages over the media also used by the system users.

Internet Protocol (IP) The protocol governing packet forwarding within the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) suite of standards developed and used on the Internet.

Internet Protocol A unique identifier for a machine attached to a network made up of address (IP address) two or more interconnected local area or wide area networks.

Local Area Network A data communications network spanning a limited geographical area, (LAN) such as a single building or campus. It provides communication

between computers and peripherals. LANs are distinguished by their small geographical size, high data rate, and low error rate.

LAN Emulation A way for legacy LANs and all higher-layer protocols and applications to integrate transparently with ATM networks.

LAN Emulation Client The LAN Emulation Client is the entity in end systems which performs (LEC) data forwarding, address resolution, and other control functions.

LAN Emulation Assigns individual LECs to different Emulated LANs. The LECS allows Configuration Server the LEC to automatically configure.

(LECS)

LAN Emulation Implements the control coordination function for the Emulated LAN. In Server addition, it provides a facility for registering and resolving MAC

addresses and/or route descriptors to ATM addresses.

LinkSwitch 2700 3Com Ethernet-to-ATM switch used to connect Ethernet network devices to each other and to an ATM backbone.

LM Local management of a network device, via a connected terminal.

Management A database of network management information that describes the Information Base specifics of individual network components.

(MIB)

Network to Network The interface between two ATM network nodes.

Interface (NNI)

Operation and A cell that contains ATM maintenance and performance monitoring Maintenance cell information. It does not form part of the upper layer information

(OAM) transfer.
