Troubleshooting guidelines

As you troubleshoot the server, keep the following guidelines in mind:

Never remove the chassis cover while the server is turned on.

Do not attempt to open the monitor. Even if the power is disconnected, stored energy in the components can be dangerous.

If a peripheral does not work, make sure that all connections are secure.

If you see an error message on the screen, write it down, word for word. You may be asked about it when calling Gateway Client Care.

Only qualified personnel should open the system for maintenance.

If you are qualified to maintain the system yourself, make sure you are properly grounded before opening the system chassis. See Chapter 3, Case Access, for more information on preventing electrostatic damage to the system.

Troubleshooting the battery installation

If you have problems after installing the new battery, try each of the items listed below, restarting the server after each try.

Turn off the server and make sure that all exterior cables are attached and secured to the correct connectors.

Make sure that all power switches are on. If the server is plugged into a power strip or surge protector, make sure it is turned on also.

Enter the BIOS Setup utility and compare the settings on the screen with your notes or the system hardware manuals. Correct any discrepancies.

Turn off the server, remove the cover, and make sure that all cables inside the case are attached securely. Also, make sure that the colored cable edges are aligned correctly and that the connectors did not miss any pins.

Disconnect and reconnect the cables. Close the case as described in “Closing the case” on page 20, reconnect the peripherals and power cords, then turn on the server.

Turn off the server, remove the cover and, if you have the proper test equipment, make sure that the new battery has power. (Although unlikely, your new battery may be defective.) Close the case as described in “Closing the case” on page 20, reconnect the power cord, then turn on the server.
