Power-on password

After you set a power-on password, you can enable the unattended-start mode. This locks the keyboard and mouse, but allows the server to start the operating system. The keyboard and mouse remain locked until you enter the correct password.

You can use any combination of up to seven characters (A–Z, a–z, and 0–9) for the power-on password. Keep a record of the password in a secure place. If you forget the power-on password, you can regain access to the server by removing the battery and then installing the battery, or by overriding or bypassing the power-on password; see “Setting the password override jumper”

Setting the password override jumper: When a power-on password is set, POST does not complete until you enter the password. If you forget the power-on password, you can regain access to the server through either of the following methods:

vEnter the administrator password at the power-on prompt, if an administrator password has been set. (See “Administrator password” for details.) Start the Configuration/Setup Utility program and change the power-on password. See “Power-on password”

vChange the position of the jumper on J15 to bypass the power-on password check. You can then start the Configuration/Setup Utility program and change the power-on password. See “System board component locations” on page 42 for the location of J15.

Notes:

1.Turn off the server, and disconnect all power cords before moving any jumpers.

2.Jumpers J19 and J3 are located on the same jumper block as jumper J15 on the system board. These jumpers are set to Disabled. Do not change the settings on these jumpers.

Attention: If you change the settings on these jumpers, the server will fail.

Table 7. Jumper J15 on the system board

Jumper name

Description

J15 Power-on password override

Changing the position of this jumper bypasses the power-on

password check if the jumper has been moved since the server

was last powered on. You do not need to move the jumper back

to the default position after the password is overridden. The

default position is a jumper on pins 1 and 2.

Changing the position of this jumper does not affect the

administrator password check if an administrator password is set.

For more information on jumper locations, see “Changing jumper positions” on page 69

Administrator password

Select this choice to set an administrator password. The administrator password provides access to all choices on the Configuration/Setup Utility main menu. You can set, change, or delete both the administrator and power-on passwords, and allow a power-on password to be changed by the user.

Attention: If an administrator password is set and then forgotten, it cannot be overridden or removed. You must replace the system board.
