Before you begin

Before you begin to install options in the server, read the following information:

vBecome familiar with the safety and handling guidelines provided in “Safety information” on page 127 and “Handling electrostatic discharge-sensitive devices” on page 130 These guidelines will help you work safely while working with the server or options.

vYou do not need to turn off the server to install or replace hot-swap power supplies, hot-swap drives, hot-swap fans, Active PCI (hot-plug) adapters, or hot-plug USB devices.

vThe orange color on components and labels in the server identifies hot-swap or hot-plug components. This means that you can install or remove the component while the system is running, provided that the system is configured to support this function.

vThe blue color on components and labels identifies touch points where you can grip a component, move a latch, and so on.

vMake sure that you have an adequate number of properly grounded electrical outlets for the server, monitor, and any other options that you intend to install.

vBack up all important data before you make changes to disk drives.

vFor a list of supported options for the eServer xSeries 350, refer to http://www.ibm.com/pc/us/compat on the World Wide Web.

System reliability considerations

To help ensure proper cooling and system reliability, make sure that:

vEach of the drive bays has either a drive or a filler panel installed.

vEach of the power supply bays has either a power supply or a filler panel installed.

vThere is at least 50 mm (2 inches) of ventilated space at the sides of the server and 100 mm (4 inches) at the rear of the server.

vThe top cover is in place during normal operation.

vThe top cover is removed for no longer than 30 minutes while the server is operating.

vThe processor housing cover over the processor and memory area is removed for no longer than 10 minutes while the server is operating.

vA removed hot-swap drive is replaced within 10 minutes of removal.

vCables for optional adapters are routed according to the instructions provided with the adapters.

vA failed fan is replaced within 48 hours.

Working inside the server with the power on

The server supports hot-add, hot-plug and hot-swap devices and is designed to operate safely while turned on with the cover removed. Follow these guidelines when you work inside a server that is turned on:

vAvoid loose-fitting clothing on your forearms. Button long-sleeved shirts before working inside the server; do not wear cuff links while you are working inside the server.

vDo not allow your necktie to hang inside the server.

vRemove jewelry, such as bracelets, necklaces, rings, and loose-fitting wrist watches.
