Glossary:

Transducer

The element of the ultrasound system that the sonographer places on the patient. Sometimes

called a probe. The transducer emits high-frequency sound waves into the patient and receives

their echoes. The ultrasound system controls the transmitting and receiving of the ultrasound

waves according to imaging parameters set by the sonographer. The ultrasound system

processes the received echoes to construct the displayed images, also in accordance with the

imaging parameters set by the sonographer.

Transducer icon

A graphic symbol that represents the ultrasonic transducer. This symbol indicates the scan plane

by placing it in the proper position and orientation to a body mark icon.

Ultrasound system

Any system that can perform diagnostic sonography, which is medical cross-sectional anatomic

and flow imaging using pulse-echo sound waves that are greater than 20 kHz (above the range of

human hearing).
