PC Diagnostics

PC problems can often be diagnosed using the IBM Drive Fitness test or Checkit Pro.

IBM Drive

The Drive Fitness test (DFT) is described at:

You must make a bootable floppy disk to use the Drive Fitness test.

Creating a DFT Bootable Floppy Disk

1.Download the bootable version of the DFT setup program from http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm

into a temporary directory on your PC.

2.Click Start, then select Run.

3.Click the Browse button to locate the setup program.

4.Click the filename, then click Open.

5.Click OK to run the setup program.

6.Insert a blank formatted 1.44 MB diskette when prompted.

Testing PC Functions Using the Drive Fitness Test

1.Change the VGA display height adjustment to show the whole screen. See “Adjusting VGA Vertical Size” on page 128.

2.Change the boot sequence so the floppy disk is the first item. (See “Changing the Boot Sequence” on page 130.)

3.Insert the DFT disk in the floppy disk drive.

4.Reboot the system
