Troubleshooting a Fan

CAUTION: Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. You should only perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as directed by the online or telephone service and support team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that came with the product.

1Locate the faulty fan indicated by the LCD panel or the diagnostic software.

2Turn off the system and attached peripherals, and disconnect the system from the electrical outlet.

3Open the system. See "Opening the System."

4Reseat the fan's power cable.

5Close the system and restart it.

6If the fan does not function, turn off the system and install a new fan. See "Cooling Fans."

7Restart the system.

If the replacement fan does not operate, see "Getting Help."

1If the system is operational, run the appropriate online diagnostic test. See "Running the System Diagnostics."

If the diagnostics indicates a fault, follow the corrective actions provided by the diagnostic program.

2If the system is not operational, turn off the system and attached peripherals, and unplug the system from the power source. Wait at least 10 seconds and then reconnect the system to power.
