To set up using ad hoc mode and factory defaults with a USB cable (Windows and Mac OS)

You can set up your device on a wireless ad hoc network (Windows) or computer to computer network (Mac OS) using the default settings if you have a USB cable nearby for a temporary connection. Follow these steps to connect to the device using its factory default ad hoc network settings:

1.Close any running applications.

2.Insert the Starter CD into the CD drive. The CD menu runs automatically.

If the CD menu does not start automatically, double-click the Setup icon on the Starter CD.

3.On the CD menu, click the button for the connection method you want to use.

4.Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the software installation, temporarily connecting a USB cable when prompted. Mac OS only: Complete the installation using the HP Network Setup Tool, which launches automatically during setup.

To set up using ad hoc mode and factory defaults with no USB cable (Windows)

You can set up your device on a wireless ad hoc network using the default settings even if you have no USB cable. Follow these steps to connect to the device using its factory default ad hoc network settings:

1.Open the configuration utility for your computer’s wireless network card, then do the following:

a. Create a new wireless profile with the following values:

Communication mode: ad hoc

Network name (SSID): hpsetup

Security (encryption): disabled

b. Activate the profile.

2.Wait two minutes for the device to obtain an IP address, then print a wireless configuration page. For more information, see Print device information pages from the control panel.

3.On the configuration page, verify the following for the device’s network settings:

Communication mode: ad hoc

Network name (SSID): hpsetup

The IP address is not 0.0.0.0

NOTE: If one of the previous conditions is not true, then repeat the preceding steps.

4.Close any running applications.

5.Insert the Starter CD into the CD drive. The CD menu runs automatically.

If the CD menu does not start automatically, double-click the Setup icon on the Starter CD.

6.On the CD menu, click the button for the connection method you want to use.

7.Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the software installation.
