Diagnostics: Network Tests > Trace Route Test

The Internet is a large and complex aggregation of network hardware, connected together by gateways. Tracking the route packets follow or finding a gateway where the packets are being discarded is difficult. The Trace Route test attempts to trace the route an IP packet follows to a specified Internet host. This test utilizes the Time To Live (TTL) field in the IP header to allow intermediate nodes to be "discovered" via Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP). Intermediate hops are discovered by launching probe packets with a small TTL and then listening for an ICMP Time Exceeded reply from a gateway. Use Refresh, Start/Stop, and Default to run the test.
