ECM

ErrorCorrection Mode. The ability of your fax
toreduce system and line errors when sending
orreceiving from another fax with ECM
capability.ECM is most effective in areas
wherethe telephone lines are in poor condition
orthere is frequent interference on the line. Do
notuse ECM if you need to send a document
quicklyand you are sure the other party can
readyour transmission without it (turning off
ECMalso turns off MMR).

FaxOnly Mode

Thisoption allows you to use your fax only to
receivefaxes automatically. If you have a
dedicatedfax line, you may want to set this
mode.

Fax/TelMode

Thisoption allows you to set the fax to
automaticallydetect whether a call is from a
faxor telephone. If the call is from another
fax,the transmission is automatically received.
Ifthe call is from a telephone, the fax rings to
letyou know, so you can pick up the handset.
Withthis feature, one telephone line can be
sharedby both the telephone and the fax.

Thesetting for documents with very small
charactersand lines.

G

G3,Group 3 fax machine

Definedby CCITT. Uses encoding schemes to
transmitimage data while reducing the amount
ofdata that needs to be transmitted, thus
reducingtransmission time. G3 fax machines
cantransmit one page in less than one minute.
Encodingschemes for G3 fax machines are
ModifiedHuffman (MH), Modified Read
(MR),and Modified Modified Read (MMR).

ManualDialling

Pressingthe individual numeric buttons to dial
afax number. Also called regular dialling.

ManualMode

Asetting that allows you to answer all
incomingtelephone and fax calls. If you hear a
slowbeep it indicates an incoming fax
transmissionfrom another machine. Just press
[START/COPY]to receive the incoming fax.

Manualredialling

Whenyou use Regular dialling, you can redial
anumber manually simply by pressing
[REDIAL]on the operation panel. The last
numbercalled is the number redialled.

Memory Sending

Scansa document into memory before the fax
dialsthe numbers and sends it. This method is
fasterthan direct sending and it allows you to
retrieveyour original document immediately
afterscanning.

Aterm applied to a variety of problems that
impairthe operation of telephone lines used for
faxing.

Numericbuttons

Theround numbered buttons on the operation
panelmarked the same as a standard telephone
keypad.Press them to perform Manual
Dialling.You also use the numeric buttons to
enternumbers and letters when you register
numbersand names, and for entering Coded
SpeedDialling codes with two or more digits.
