Word	Acronym Description	Definition
ATA	Advanced Technology Attachment	A standard interface for connecting a computer’s
		storage devices, such as CD-ROMs and hard-drives.
BIOS	Basic Input/Output System	Built-in software routines, stored in ROM, that
		contain the code for controlling the keyboard, monitor,
		disk drives, serial communications, etc.
channel		A link that transports data point-to-point.
concatenation		The process of connecting entities end-to-end on a
		single communications channel.
CPU	Central Processing Unit	The computational segment of a computer.
DMA	Direct Memory Access	A method of transferring data from a storage device
		to RAM without using CPU resources.
HBA	Host Bus Adaptor	An adaptor card that includes the I/O logic, software
		and processing to manage the transfer ofthat infor-
		mation between the host system and devices con-
		nected to it.
HDT	HD Turbo	A mode that uses the highest data rate portions of the
		disk drives for maximum throughput until the disk is
		full, but with a tradeoff in total data capacity of the
		disk from 40% to 80%,depending on the RAID level.
IDE	Integrated Drive Electronics	Most commonly used data bus for PC’s.
LED	Light Emitting Diode	An electronic device that illuminates when powered.
Linux		Free, open-source UNIX-based operating system.
