UPS Setup Configuration
Connect the modem to the UPS by connecting one end of the serial cable to the
UPS Port 2 DB---25F connector and the other to the modem (refer to Chapter 7,
“Serial Communications”). If using a standard serial cable, a null modem adapter
is required for the connection to the modem.
The Powerware 9315 UPS can only use serial Port 2, DB---25F,for the Remo te
Notification option. This connection is located in the serialcommunications panel
at the base of the UPS cabinet, behind the front door.
The modem operates at only one baud rate because there is no handshaking
between the modem and theU PS. Select the lowest common baud rate (less than
or equal to 2400 baud) compatible with the capability of the UPS interface
equipment. For example, if the computer only has a 2400 baud modem, then the
UPS should be set for 2400 baud. Remember, the remote computer modem can
always slow down to the UPS baud rate, e.g., a 14400 baud modem can run at
2400 baud, but a 2400 baud modem cannot run at 14400 baud.
Following the instructions in Chapter 5, “Using the Monitor Panel” and Chapter 7,
“Serial Communications”, use the LCD screen and pushbuttons on the Monitor
Panel to access the setup screen and configure Port 2 as follows.
NOTE: The modem should be connected to the UPS as described in the modem
manufacturer’s manual before configuring th e UPS communications port.
<MODE> Remote Notify
<RATE> Thebaudrateatwhichthemodemwillcommunicate
to other modems, 2400 baud maximum.
<DATA/STOP> 8 1 Standard 8 data bits, 1 st op bit, no parity.
<HANDSHAKING> Disabled
<SAVE> Yes. To save new configuration.
The handshaking feature listed is for UPS-to-terminal handshaking, not
UPS-to-modem handshaking. Setting the handshaking to “modem” has no effect.
If the remote terminal has buffering problems because of excessive data transfer
rate from the UPS, XON/XOFF handshaking can beselected to resolve this issue.
The user must make sure that the modem (not the remote terminal) at the remote
terminal end of the connection is configured for either hardware handshaking or
none at all. This is required so that the modem does not attempt to trap the
XON/XOFF characters and prevent them from being transmittedto the U PS.
