Read this chapter for information about the Internet and online services software that is included with your computer.

6 Using an Online Service or the Internet

You can use your Macintosh to join the fastest growing organization on Earth: the online community. By connecting your computer to an online service or the Internet, you can exchange electronic mail (“e-mail”) messages, gather information on topics of interest, participate in discussion groups, download software, and use many other services.

Your Macintosh computer includes software that you can use to connect to an online service or the Internet. This chapter describes the software and provides a brief introduction to the information and services that are available online.

In addition to the included software, you need special equipment, such as a modem, to get online. For more information about the equipment you need, see Chapter 4, “Connecting Your Computer to a Telephone Line.”

Connection software

Your Macintosh comes with two different application programs that you can use to get online: America Online and the Apple Internet Connection Kit. Although both programs provide Internet access, they have different features; you can use the one that best addresses your needs.
