Advanced data usage settings

Two other settings available fr om the Menu icon can have dra -
matic effects—but may sometimes be useful:
• Data roaming can result in ste ep additional c harges. However,
in some locations this may be t he only way to connect to th e
Internet.
• Restrict background data affects all your apps across all ava il-
able networks, and may c ause some features to s top working.
This is an extreme step tha t should be used wit h caution.
Control airplane mode & other network settings
With the exception of VPN, w hich is visible on ly to a tablet’s own -
er, any user can adjust these g lobal settings .
These settings are availa ble under Settings > Wireless & n et-
works > More.
• Airplane mode. Check to turn off all data tran smission from
the tablet.
• VPN. Touch to adjust settings for ac cessing a secured loca l
network from outside th at network. See “Conne ct to virtual
private networks” in nex t section. (Availab le only for Nexus 7
with mobile data.)
• NFC. Check to turn on Near Field C ommunication (NFC) fea -
ture (required for Androi d Beam).
