The gun and cable assembly is held by the operator who guides the automatically fed wire along the joint, maintaining a contact tip to work distance of about 3/8 to 1/2 inch (10 – 12 mm) This is called electrical stickout. This electrical stick- out (ESO) must be properly maintained by the operator. The electric arc is made in the gap between the work and the tip end of a small diameter wire. When the power source is properly set, the arc gap is maintained automatically.

THE SELF-SHIELDED FCAW WELDING ARC

Figure 14 illustrates the action taking place in the self shield- ed FCAW (Innershield) welding arc. It closely resembles what is actually seen while welding.

El operador sostiene la antorcha, y guía la alimentación de alambre automática a lo largo de la unión, manteniendo una distancia aproximada de 10 – 12 mm (3/8 a 1/2 pulgadas) entre la punta de contacto y el trabajo. Esto se llama punta elec- trizada de alambre (ESO) y el operador debe mantenerla ade- cuadamente. El arco eléctrico se origina en la abertura entre el trabajo y la punta de un alambre de diámetro pequeño. Cuando la fuente de poder se establece adecuadamente, la abertura del arco se mantiene automáticamente.

L'opérateur tient le pistolet raccordé à son câble et guide le fil à alimentation automatique le long du joint à souder, en maintenant un écartement tube contact-pièce d'environ 3/8 à 1/2 po (10-12 mm). C'est la portée terminale. L'opérateur doit bien maintenir cette portée terminale. L'arc électrique est amorcé dans l'écartement entre la pièce et l'extrémité tube contact d'un fil de petit diamètre. Quand la source de courant est bien réglée, l'écartement de l'arc est maintenu automatiquement.
