In DHCP settings at a more specific level overrides higher levels. For example you
can configure a DNS server for all clients, the create a group that overrides the
setting. This allows defaults to be set at a high level to apply to most clients, while
exceptions can be places just where they are needed. Many settings are only
supported by certain specific types of clients, and are ignored by the majority of
clients.
Basic options you should pay attention to include:
Address ranges: The ra nge of a ddresses to us e for dy namic I P client s.
Defaul t lease time: The def ault le ngth of leases assigne d to cl ients, if the
client doesn't reques t a lea se leng th.
Maximu m lease time: The max imum l ength o f leases allow ed to c lients.
If a cl ient req uests a higher value it wil l be ref used.
Client hostnam e: The hostnam e the client should u se.
Defaul t route rs: The default gatewa y the c lient s hould u se.
Domain name: The DNS domain name th e clien t shoul d use.
DNS ser vers: Th e IPs o f the DN S server s the c lient s hould u se.
NTP serv ers: The IPs of the N TP serve rs the client should use.
Static routes: Static routes the cl ient sh ould us e.
Time servers: The IPs of the time servers the client should use.
Lesser used client options include:
Subnet mask: The subn et mask the c lient s hould u se. Ra rely ne eded.
Broadca st addre ss: The broadca st addre ss the client should use. R arely
needed.
Log ser vers: T he IPs o f the L OG serve rs the client should use.
Swap s erver: The IP o f the sw ap ser ver the client should use. N ormally
only u sed for diskles s netwo rk boot ed clien ts.

NIS doma in: The NIS dom ain the client should use.
NIS serv ers: Th e IPs of the NIS server the cl ient sho uld use .
Font s ervers: The IPs of the font ser vers th e clien t shoul d use. Normal ly
only u sed for X termi nals.
XDM ser vers: T he IPs o f the XD M serve rs the client should use.
Normall y only used fo r X ter minals.
NetBIOS name s ervers: The IPs of the Netbios name s ervers the cli ent
should use.
NetBIOS node ty pe: The NetBIOS name resoluti on met hod the client
should use.
NetBIOS scope: The Net BIOS sco pe the client should use.
Time of fset: T he offs et from a time server the cl ient sho uld be using.
Custom options allows you to add additional DHCP options required by a
client.
