Appendix F: Maintenance
This appendix describes how toperform routine maintenance on the
OA 5000 Series OpticalAttenuators. There are no user-serviceable parts in
the OA 5000. Should yourinstrument need service, contact your nearest
Tektronixservice representative.
The followingmaintenance procedures are discussed in this chapter.
HCleaning the Optical Port
HChanging Optical PortConnectors
If the OA 5000 performance appears degraded, the opticalfiber and optical
port may be dirty.Clean the fiber connector with a clean cloth. To clean an
optical port, perform the followingsteps:
1. Turnthe power supply off or pull the OA 5000 out of the power module.
2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove t he four screws that secure the
bulkhead connector to the frontpanel (see Figure A-1 on page A ---16).
3. Gently pullthe bulkhead out of the unit and unscrew the fiber connector.
Be careful not to pullbeyond the fiber slack. If there is insufficient slack
or if youaccidently push the disconnected fiber back into the instru-
ment, then perform the followingthree steps:
a. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, turn the securing screw on the right-
side cover 90_counter-clockwiseand remove the side cover (See
Figure A-1).
b. Youwill now have access to the optical fiber. Unscrew it from the
bulkhead if necessary or push itback through the front panel.
c. Reinstall the cover when finished. Turnthe securing screw to lock
the side cover.
4. Using a soft, lint-free cloth with a h igh-quality glass cleaner, clean the tip
of the fiber cable.
5. If available, use low-pressure compressedair or canned air to blow any
dirt out of the bulkhead connector. If compressed air is not available,
then the bulkhead will have to be taken apart and cleaned. Refer to the
Changing the OpticalPort Connectors procedure, on page A ---17, for
informationabout bulkhead disassembly.
6. After cleaning the bulkhead, reconnect the fiber and installthe bulk-
head. Be sure to reinstall the dust coverchain.
